PdaNet for Android PdaNet for BlackBerry
PdaNet for PalmOS PdaNet for Windows Mobile PdaNet for iPhone
has been one of the most popular software for Windows Mobile phones, Palm OS phones and the iPhone. It is now ported to the Android system! PdaNet provides you with FULL Internet access so all your email, instant message programs will work without any setting changes. Just like the old PdaNet, it is as simple as clicking on the PdaNet tray icon and your computer will go online instantly. PdaNet does NOT require root access or hacking your phone's firmware in order to work. It is just a regular Android application that works on Android phones as-is. Currently PdaNet supports USB tethering on all Android OS's and devices. Tethering is fast, secure and will also charge your phone at the same time. Your phone can either connect to 3G data or WiFi, even through VPN and PdaNet will share the connection with your computer.
Register yourself to our Twitter site to follow updates on PdaNet.
New! Version 2.01 in beta, supports all new Android phones including Motorola Droid/Cliq, Samsung Galaxy/Moment and HTC Hero/Eris. Download it here (or 64 bit, may require turning off driver signature check).
PdaNet for Android
Download version 1.17 (or 64 bit build).
Purchase full version ($29).

Note: Once trial expires, you can continue using PdaNet for free with limitations to http connections only. Users still have Android 1.0 should install version 1.15 instead.

Loaded it last night aaron61c works perfect on mine. There is a trial offer so you can try before you buy. Think it is good for a wk and it is very fast. Just be sure to set up your new connection as private in order for it to work.

Guys. Tethering is free and easy. Hook you Hero up to your computer with a usb cable. Then on the Hero go to Settings, Wireless controls, and check "Mobile Network Sharing"  If you are using windows your pc will want to install a driver. If you loaded HTC Sync the driver it is looking for in under Programs Files, HTC,  Drivers.  If you are using Linux it just works with no driver install. I have tested on both. Dont go buy or try third party software when you phone will do it all and for free.

Disclaimer: I do not know if tethering violates your contract so tether at your own risk.

tethering as such does not work on my computer, I hook it up, but then it doesn't share the internet.  I don't know why, but pdanet works, the mobile sharing does not?  I get the two computer icons in the bottom right but nothing else.  Any hints?

Windows:

Hook your Hero back up per my above post. Now make sure your ethernet cable is disconnected from your pc and your wireless card is not hooked up to any AP. If you have your Hero installed correctly It will show up as a Local Area Connection (HTC Remote NDIS based Device) in your Network Connections. If you see this it will or should work. I by no means am against buying a program I just want our readers to know that you do not need or have to and yes I understand what is easier for some may not be for others. I don't see myself using my Hero very often for Internet but what a great option if needed.

In Linux under Network Connections (Wired) you will see a new usb ethernet interface. Just select it and your on.

I think it is being blocked because it does not work for me. I tried  it on 3 computers and all I got was local access only. I tried 4 different settings still no luck. When is the last time you tried it chazz?  Also if any of you get this up and running dont download large files or movies because it will reflect on your data usage. And may throw up a red flag with cc. Its ok to use it in moderation for web surfing or when your some place that does not have internet.

mopar you seem to be correct. I tried today and could not get the tether to surf. I dont see myself using it much, but it would be nice to have in a pinch.

Mopar can you still surf with the pda net. I am trying to decide if I want to spend the $30. Dont want to spend the money and it only works some of the time. Only need it every now and then when on the road. I read somewhere that you could not do the pda net and htc sync on the same phone. Thank you

pda net and htc sync use different drivers as they are not compatible. When you try to run pda.net it will say driver not compatible would you like to switch drivers. I forgot what it says exactly but it will do it automatic for you i can switch between both with out problems. I found that link and from reading it from the forum it is suppose to be free. Install it and see what happens you can always uninstall  it. I use mine when ever I go to deer camp or traveling .

I loaded the pda net and it works great. Will come in handy on the road when wifi is not available.

Well I guess I threw up a red flag with CC. I hooked it up out the box and installed the software on the sd card and then was able to surf the web with my wi-fi turned off on both phone and computer. It showed up as a new Lan connection. I got 4.2Meg down speeds through speedtest. I watched a Netflix movie in Fullscreen and it was awesome. Woke up this morning and have not been able to get back on at that speed all day. Only way I can hook up is to put phone in 1X mode then connect computer to phone before enabling Internet setting in phone. What gives? It was awesome while it lasted though. Was ready to call DSL service company and cancel it. Glad I didn't.

I have never gotten my hero to tether without pdanet. Luckily my razr stills tethers with a modem connection. It does not even have a contract on the phone but yet it still works. :)

Zuko how long did it take you to download it? I never use mine to download movies this is just a lite surfing app or a few songs to download. Never use it for your main connection.

FYI, if you root your hero, you have access to 'Wireless Tether' (not available on market)

http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

I'm using it to post this now. No USB cable required...tether usiing wifi (device shows up as an ad-hoc device 'G1Tether', or Bluetooth!

This app alone is worth rooting IMO
