Android 2.* Update
No one seems to know, not even CS employees. All I've heard from a couple of people is that there will be an upgrade, probably skipping 1.6, going straight to 2.0 or 2.1, but no timeframe.

CS announcements could lead to disappointment. I hope this won't be the case this time. I'm really looking forward to the update, though.
This will be a great update to get, the google will have voice guided turn by turn as well as lots of bug fixes..cannot wait. I am not sure what yoy meant by disappointing news from CS, do they go back on their word sometimes? i hope not.This will increase their sales of phones with android OS tho, so hopefully they will come thru..just wonder why they are so far behind in OS software..they need to stay on top of the curve not behind.
Heard about the update to 2.1 well before the cell south release. Keep an eye out for htc's own news cause whenever they say it is coming, sprint and cell south will both get it. All they are basically doing is porting there in house utilities like sense ui and others to the new system. There is also a leaked 2.1 htc rom for people with rooted phones.
You can sign up for updates through htc. I have 2.0.1 on my droid you guys are going to love it. Turn by turn nav voice it is sweet.
Shameless bump for updates because i want this so bad that i'm on the verge of rooting my phone and flashing the community 2.1 rom.
...except the camera doesn't work yet... or voicemail notifications... or <insert random feature here>....

HTC an cs both have to be in on updates which is a big drawback of Android. Depending on 3 different entities ie Google, but that's a given and then HTC and cs. One has to worry after purchasing an expensive phone if the carrier or handset maker will decide to abandon updates sooner than the public would like.
Android has potential it just needs a desktop program and a single point of sale and support , look to Apple.
I fell it could be done while still being open source just cutting out the obstacles to getting good support and timely upgrades. When one invests in a high dollar phone it would be nice to upgrade the software to ehance the device and keep the hardware for awhile.
I hope future upgrades in software, if cs decides to continued to put the money into it do not take so long. If they sell multiple Android phones they may realize the cost may not be worthy it to continue upgradin% for the life of the phone. It would be great to get some kind of official statement by them to know where they are headed with the future of snartphones .
good news, google is now working on an update to their OS to allow apps to be stored and run on the sd card, thereby increasing the apps sizes to include better quality graphics, sound and richer envrioments, ie like the Aplle Appstore apps. Now the big question is will CS persue it? This is due out this year, by end of summer. I really don't like having carriers get in the way of upgrading a phone. Hopefully cs will stick this OS out, and update the various phone models they sell. these phones cost too much money for users to not be able to enhance them with software.
I switched to CellSouth yesterday and got the Hero to replace my iPhone3GS. I'm hoping that 2.1 comes sooner rather than later because 1.5 simply doesn't cut it.
Good news, 2.1 is slowly getting firmer. HTC has officially announced midmarch for their 2.1rom, with carriers like Sprint and Cellsouth getting theirs after... HTC tweaks it for them? I dunno...
Sorry no news, hopefully HTC getting freaking sued by apple for nonsense won't delay the update.
I hope that i wont get disappointed. I am waiting another week and i am rooting my hero. The way it is is just so weak and you cant compare it to the Iphone 3Gs. I love CS dont get me wrong but when it comes to any kind of updates for their phones is so slow and even dont happen at all. So pls CS do smth
Doesn't look promising for 2.1 in the immediate future. Looks like it'll be a little bit longer....
A snip of an email from a trustworthy friend earlier:
"... I do have the 2.1 beta but it is jacked up. It is watermarked and just
crap. It has about 63 noted issues...."
On a good note... another snippet from the same email:
"...I was told that we are having 6 more androids coming out this year
including the droid which has a little more power...."

Well i rooted my phone anyway, works like a jam. powerful device our hero. Its awesome all the stuff you can do with it. I am very happy and even if they dont come up with the update i will keep it my way(rooted). awesome awesome
