Android 2.* Update
how did you root, I tried and could not, also does everything still work? camera, video camera etc? 3g does it still work? If possible point me to the direction you used. Thanks
Yes everything works
buddy of mine with an eris (verizon's version just a different casing) took the plunge on the leaked 2.1 rom that's out and he freaking loves it. we'll get it, still trying to be patient lol.
Well, i finally broke down and sent a message to the CellSouth Discovery Center asking about when we would get the 2.1 update.
I actually got a response.
June 2010.
I wonder if cellsouth will truely be committed to keeping up the updates.
It is taking a ridiculous amount of time. The next update to the os will be out tbis fall, how long till we get it?

Well, the Droid got an update last week, but the sprint hero and the eris still don't have an official 2.1 update so we're not any farther behind than the other national carriers. HTC's official update was this month as they announced (for OEM phones), with individual carriers following suit afterward. I personally don't expect us to get more updates beyond 2.1 on the hero either, but that will make me perfectly happy.
I have 2.1 and i am rolling. I dont even want the stock RUU from CS when it comes out IF IT COMES OUT EVER. I like it just the way i have it. If anyone is ready to root just send me a PM and leave their Gtalk and i will be more than happy to help. I have all what i need i mean all what i need the phone for.
Tethering (using your phone as a wifi router that you can connect up to 6 PC at once) live wallpapers, more bars(better baseband/radio), applications installed in to my SDcard(unlimited apps installed), better battery life(way better, way the hell better). Customizable to your needs.
Rooting will avoid warranty and all but i dont care, this is my phone and i want it the way i want it, not the way some guy thought it would be good looking-ish.
OK guys just found out that CS is releasing their 2.1 update sometime in June and i have it confirmed by a HTC guy too.
The date is not sure but all that person told was that CS has the go from HTC.
Finally i hope we will get it.
I just want the RUU so i can make my own ROM.
yeah I don't even want the CS rom. I want someone to chop it up and make it all nice and rooted and shiny :D
Can anyone help me get my phone rooted and a custom rom on it?
I feel like I am missing out on so much with the stock rom.
I am in Memphis, TN BTW

Hey thanks for the offer. I have a surgery coming up June 2nd(adenoidectomy) so I don't think I will make it up that way soon. Thank you for the offer though.

If you follow the instructions here,
it's pretty straight forward. I ran into one problem creating the gold
card, but once I figured out what I was doing wrong, it was a piece of
cake. And loading roms gets easier with every attempt. I've probably
flashed 8-10 different roms trying them out. It almost gets addicting.
It's definitely worth the time. I probably won't update when the
official 2.1 finally comes out, haha.
I even had trouble trying it that way. It's been a while now and I don't remember what issues I was having. I think it was in the cmd prompt
they were just waiting for root to be achieved on the sprint release so that they could have it nice and patched up on their rom. :D
That's hands down my biggest gripe about being stuck with 1.5 -- the large number of Android apps that are 2.0+. A co-worker has the Verizon Droid Eris and he HATES the 2.1 update. He said his phone's been crashing left and right, locking up for seconds at a time, and is ready to take his phone back to Verizon to get it replaced to 1.5.
Myself, I'm starting to look hard at rooting the phone. I had an old HTC Apache that I would use the ROM kitchen to cook ROMs for, so I think I could do it. My biggest concern about rooting the Hero is not being able to currently go back to 1.5 -- just in case it's horrible. Also, I'm about to go on an out-of-state trip and I'm quite concerned about roaming not working right.
Cellular South is full of it. All they have to do is take the Sprint 2.1 update, take out the sprint apks, add the voicemail settings, and add that lame CStext app, and play with the build.prop. Done. They are trying to find a way to keep us from rooting our phones... Don't worry everyone... I will make a flashable zip file with the new 2.1 update from Cellular South (Take out all the bull crap and useless HTC battery draining programs) and release it to the rooted users...
Also, to drhogie, the only reason he is experiencing problems on his phone with the 2.1 update is because there is a ton of useless junk on his phone the comes with the 2.1 update. That is why I take all of that out and then make my ROMs. Anyways, rooted users will live on and Cellular South will not stop us... They need to hurry up though because I have spent about 90% of my free time trying to figure out the voicemail settings BUT I am getting CLOSE! :D
