My dad talked to cell south business reps visiting his bank Tuesday. He asked them about the update and one of them made a phone call and replied with two weeks as the release time. So maybe that is a little more definite.

If I didn't have problems following the directions for rooting the Hero I would have done it by now.  Don't get me wrong...I do not think of myself as a "slow" person...I am a network administrator with T-Systems North America...but some of these steps in the instructions are just "mind bottling"...to quote Will Ferrell from "Blades of Glory".  Has anyone in the Tupelo area actually rooted their Hero and might be willing to help out other Hero owners?

Monring all, I spoke to a buddy who works for CS and was told 2.1 is any day now. :)

As I have now rooted this topic no longer concerns me. LOL.   Was not too hard to do either.  Gdawg1972, what problems were you having?  The only issues I had were not having the HTC driver so adb saw my device but the sprint ruu did not.  Your phone has to say MY HTC in device manager not android phone. Having PDAnet changed my driver.

The guide is long but if you follow it word for word it is pretty straight forward.

Basically this is what you are accomplishing:

0. download and extract sdk (not mentioned until page to root linked near bottom of guide but adb is needed to get the cid number for goldcard)
1. create goldcard to allow sprint ruu to be installed.
(used this site to reverse numbers instead of qmat or whatever)
http://hexrev.soaa.me/
2. install sprint ruu and root it
3. install recovery image then start flashing roms

Let me know if you need any help. Not calling you "slow" either i just personally did not find it that difficult.

Let me go through the guide again and I will get back to you on what tripped me up.  Seems like it was the qmat thing now that I think about it...the link to download it was no good or something like that.

OK...I have started going through the guide and this is what I have run into...

Step 1.  Done
Step 2.  How do I get the SD Card ID?  Where do I get QMAT?
Step 3.  Dependent on Step 2
Step 4.  Dependent on Step 3
Step 5.  Dependent on Step 4
Step 6.  A.  Downloaded Android SDK
             B.  ASRoot2 Exploit file not found when trying to download it
             C.  Downloaded the recovery image
             D.  Cannot do the next steps with out the ASRoot2 file

This is what I am talking about...the links in the guide seem to be bad...this is what problem I am having.

Would be nice to get a guide with working links!

GDAWN, QMAT was replaced by PSAS which is what I used.  You can google QMAT and find the link to download.

OK...I downloaded it and sent it to my home email account.  I will tinker with it when I get done embarrassing myself on the golf course after work.

You using this guide gdawg? Cause I was able to get all the files. Do you have an xda account? That could stop you from getting the files.

On the goldcard I see you are stopping here:

03. Use adb to run this command: adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid

What you need to be doing is first have the android sdk extracted somewhere like C:/android-sdk-windows or something like that. browse to the tools folder inside there with a command prompt. Type adb devices and you should see your phone serial number listed. If not make sure debugging mode is on.  next type adb shell cat /sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:*/cid  which will give you the CID number.

Not trying to be rude but ignore rscmodder's suggestion for downloading qmat. All you need it for is to reverse the numbers in your cid. I posted a website above in previous post where you just enter the number and press reverse no need to download additional software.
http://hexrev.soaa.me/   just saying that is all you need it for.

Flip, thanks for the link above in re to QMAT and Goldcard.  That would make it much simpler.  I wish someone would create a new guide as all of the "current" ones out there have the steps we follow, ie QMAT, but there are so many new tricks that would make it quicker such as yours!!!

Yeah the reason it is like that is because they just linked all the existing guides together from previous sprint rooting.  They dont follow a true logical order because they are individual guides. Think the reason I had no problems is that I just went out on google and started researching and learning all this stuff so I would know what was going on if I ran into any issues when following the steps.  I think i used an entirely different gold card guide cause it linked to that website that was not on the other one.  Also there are things like the recovery image being at 1.6.2 currently instead of 1.5.2. Currently I am running the GOdMode overclocked kernel.  All this was pretty new for me but the more I hang out on XDA everyday the more I learn.

The more I hang out at XDA and here the more I'm ready to drop my Hero into a pool and get a Desire.  Modding xbox's back in the day was soooo much easier. :)

Would the update for the Cellular South HTC Hero come from HTC or Cellular South?  I am sure CS would want us applying their update.
