Android 2.* Update
From their Facebook page...
Cellular South
I see on youtube that someone has put android 2.2 on the Hero. Cellular South say they will not be upgrading to the ver 2.2 (heck still don't have 2.1) So if someone figures out how to put 2.2 on our Hero's and it works please start a new discussion and post a step by step guide.
I'm on 2.2 :)
Running CyanogenMod test4. Here's a link... http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=722122
Hell, I'm just about desperate enough to pay someone a reasonable amount to root my phone for me.
I don't care if CS knows I'm rooted. I have no plans to take my phone to them anyway. Show me how to put the first ROM on mine and I will be off and running. Email me if you can help me and are in Memphis, TN

FYI, I rooted my phone and am using Bittersweet. 3G worked fine but between Jackson and Vicksburg, I lost data.
So, I dialed *228 and after the phone booted up, I had 2G data. I would try that while roaming to see if that will work.
Anyone in Memphis wanna come over or invite me over and help me get this thing rooted?
Jerry
I feel so bad for you XD although i am a minor and a Bay-rat
FYI... Do NOT dial *228 when roaming. A CS tech support person told me that it will make data impossible to acquire until you are back in the calling area.
Anyone in Memphis wanna come over or invite me over and help me get this thing rooted?

Ship it to me and I'll do it, ha.
Finally took the plunge and rooted Thursday night. The only part I had trouble with was verifying my GoldCard -- I had two different 2GB microSD cards (one Kingston, one Sandisk that came w/ my Hero). Both failed the test to begin with. I recreated each card, both failed again. Found somewhere online that it does take a few times for the GoldCard to take. Eventually (4th time on Sandisk) I got it to take. From there, it was straightforward.
Currently running Cyanogenmod 6.0.0 test4 (2.2 is niiiiice, but no camera). Going to try Darchdroid and Bittersweet this weekend as well to see which one I like the best.
Has anyone tried running Fresh 2.3.3? Its pretty sweet. I have tried blue echo, but noticed that it was a bit hard to read information on the screen at times. It was also slow to start up everytime. If you want the live wallpapers to run correctly and more widgets on your phone, plus this rom uses less memory, I would suggest Fresh 2.3.3. http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=681856 . Enjoy!
The 2.1 Update for CellSouth is released!

That link has all the details. Still unsure if I'm going to go straight to that update, or if I'm just going to wait and try other ROMs.
Looks like I know what I'll be doing tonight to mine and the wifes phones. Funny thet its a Linux phone but you can't update it through Linux. No biggy just curious.....
anyone rooted the new 2.1 RUU from CS. I am still running the 1.5 unrooted on my CS htc Hero, but I would like to root the 2.1 RUU once its available!!
The new 2.1 is easily root'able (much easier than the old 1.5 method of creating goldcards, etc...)
I done the update last night as soon as it came out. everything went smooth and easy.
but today my battery drained within 7 hours and before the update it would last at least 14 hours. What can i look for or change to help the battery last longer with the new update? is anyone else seeing this happen?
thanks
Anyone been able to successfully run a rom with live wallpaper??
Yes.
You can flash the lwp.zip file that you can find from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=658755
However, it will depend on what rom you have installed which ones will work or not.
For example, I could not get the Grass or Water ones to load on Bittersweet, but with the Dirteh South using the same file, I can get them all to load but Nexus.
