Tethering Does Not Work On CellularSouth
I posted this in the thread "Tether Your Hero It Works", but did not get any replies so figured I needed to start it's own.
Well I guess I threw up a red flag with CS! I hooked it up out the box and installed the software on the sd card and then was able to surf the web with my wi-fi turned off on both phone and computer. It showed up as a new Lan connection. I got 4.2Meg down speeds through speedtest. I watched a Netflix movie in Fullscreen and it was awesome! Woke up this morning and have not been able to get back on at that speed all day. Only way I can hook up is to put phone in 1X mode then connect computer to phone before enabling Internet setting in phone. What gives? It was awesome while it lasted though. Was ready to call DSL service company and cancel it. Glad I didn't.
Since that post I have tried to do it again, but all I can get now is to tether in 1X mode and it is very slow. This sucks! Will that PDANET program really let me tether reliably? What kind of speeds are we talking about? Still stuck in 1X mode with it or will it go 3G? Please help as I am trying to decide what to do. If CellSouth would offer a tether connection for an extra fee I would gladly pay it to be able to get rid of my land line and DSL. Come on CellSouth, are you listening?
There is no way cell souths net wok could handle the load for tethering, thats why they won't allow it. Even as a paid for option.
I thought I heard the sound of back-up generators kicking in at the CellSouth office when I started watching a movie through it.

Cell souths network can and does handle the load for tethering just fine. The issue here is just that the hero can not tether with the built in function for some reason. All the windows mobile phones with built in internet connection sharing on cell south work fine for tethering. Also any other phone that has modem drivers for a computer such as motorola and blackberries work too. Besides cell south sales usb data connection cards and netbooks with 3g modems with the intention of them connecting to the same 3g network as everyone else. All these devices do the exact same thing as *tethering*. Yes cell south does not support tethering but they also do not actively block it unless they are only blocking the hero. It does take some technical know how and research to make it work but it does work on many phones. If they are blocking the hero I believe they are doing it because this phone is very popular and easy to tether unlike the other phones mentioned. This would allow people to use high ammounts of data on the network very easily. When you get the netbook or data card the highest cap you can purchase is 5gb a month. And while the unlimited cell phone plan says it is unlimited I can gaurantee if you got above 5gb you would get a notice of some kind. All the major cell companies that are supposedly unlimited have a magic number around 5-6 gb. But shoot I have used a vast ammount of data on my phone since I got it. I am almost over 3 1/2 gb of usage. :) Just my 2 cents on the situation at hand.
P.S. Please do not contact me asking for instructions on how to tether the other phones. We all have Google and believe me it is out there.
