You guys should really check out aospMOD on XDA for your Hero. No bloat or fancy junk, just pure Google experience. It's blazing fast and has JIT enabled by default.

@Jeremypb

Are you still using the AOSP mod overclocked etc?  I have the CM6.1.0 stable mod but it has started acting choppy and strange on me.  I was thinking about trying something different.  I want my old Hero for cellular south to breath new life :)

HELP!

I am using aospMod v0.9.9.2 overclocked to 800mhz right now, going back and forth between that and aospCmod (gingerbread). still no problems : )

I'm new to MOD ROM's. I have not found much info on Cyanogen 6.1.0 and CS which is what I am running.  My main reasoning was for a business app that was lost due to a dev update which required 2.2+ . Naturally I was dead in the water with my Hero 6250.

I am looking for any insights to useful apps. I am using a dialer that allows name search/dial. Other than that, no extra bells and whistles. Any info on overclocking would help as well. If I have to flash to another ROM for this, I won't mind a bit.

I have very little that I require. Although I have noticed that I am now getting the occasional 3G at the house with the new ROM which is very nice ;)

I have rooted and flashed a few heros for my friends with cyanogenmod 7.0.3, which is 2.3. I am also running cyanogenmod 7 on my desire and i have not had any problems at all nor has my friends. I have not messed with CM6 but CM7 has an Overclocking feature in with the rom. It lets you choose from a list of minimum and maximum frequencies.

The last few days CM6 has had it's issues, longer messages not being able to send, chat freezing, you tube doesn't seem to want to work well.

perhaps some of the over clocking features in CM7 will work better for me. I will be looking for tried and proven steps. I'm not in a position to buy a new phone from bricking it. It's not like I can move a jumber and dial the internal speed down like I can on a board :P

Thanks for the replies!!

There's an app in the market called "Set CPU for root users" that might help.

I am really enjoying my Hero.  The size in nice and enjoying CM7 ( currently 2.3.7).  I especially like the phone since changing to CM7 (GengerBread)--no miscalls.  Added an hump back and double battery so no battery issues now.  Still fits my case plus easier to hold.
