You'll want to wait on the CS version to eliminate network issues.  And if you've rooted your Hero, and you flash the new Sprint rom, you'll loose root.

Well, not if you "flash" a zip file from recovery. BUT if you download the RUU from the site, you will loose root and you might not even be able to install the Cellular South 2.1 update (I am not sure on what the boot loader version will be)

After inquiring I was told that CS was testing the 2.1 release.  No date given for us though...
Reading some of the posts over on the Sprint Hero forum gives me patience; seems that there are numerous bugs in 2.1.
