"Mobile Web" vs Smartphone data plan

A friend of mine has a smartphone that is part of the $40 package of text, picture messaging, and "mobile web" that CS offers.  The other 3 users of the package have normal motorola phones, but she has an HTC.   The others can all access the basic mobile internet sites, but she can't get anything on the HTC phone.  Is there any way to get around this on a smartphone to get access to at least the same basic sites that the Motorola phones have?
