new here, so how does this termination fee really work?

Are you looking at moving from another carier to Cellular South?  If so you need to go to a store or call their 800 # and they will port your # over and transfer you.  The way it worked when I did it was I paid my last AT&T bill with Cancellation charge,and filled out some CS paperwork, and CS credited my account.  I didn't have a bill for several months as CS was very quick with my termination fee credit.  Call CS and they'll explain it better than I did but it went off without a hitch.  Very please with CS service and support.  Great customer service team as well.
