In 2008, we participated in the FCC's 700 MHz auction and successfully purchased licenses for $192 million to cover virtually all of Mississippi and Tennessee and most of Alabama. The company plans to utilize this spectrum to deploy Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the future.
Now, this may be jumping the gun a bit, but think about the devices that this will open Cell South up to.....LTE iPhone anyone?
As this is also the bandwidth bread and butter of AT&T, Verizon and, when WiMax fails, Sprint every conceivable device will be available with a unlock and SIM swap. Sure knowing Cell South that could still be 4 years away but hey, here's hoping.
In our dreams
You are right and this is completely possible. It's a matter of the technology catching up with the providers. The phone hardware providers (Apple, Samsung, Motorola) were making the move quickly to 700Mhz a few years ago because of the expansion and data possiblities available @ 700, then all of a sudden their product and development teams slowed down quickly when the economy went south. I too hope this move will happen quickly since Cellular South cannot move any quicker than the hardware providers who make their equipment.
