Milestone ROMs
From a performance/feature aspect, does anyone that have anything negative to say about rooting and changing ROMs on the Milestone? I don't care about warranties or anything
Any ROM recommendations? Anyone running Froyo?
You should ask this question in this thread over on Pinstack...
there are several CS guys there who've rooted and are running custom ROMs on Milestone.
I am running Bugless Beast V0.4 currently. It is a Froyo based Rom, and very stable.
The new version of bugless just came out, V0.5. I will flash it this weekend.
So far, out of the ones I have tried, this is the most stable and pretty smooth running. Much better than stock. I am using Launcher Pro with this Rom.
I am also running a chevy LV overclock kernel.
Clocked right now at 1.1 ghz, but you can go higher if you want.
Nice... I'll check it out tonight or tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the info
Holy crap....the phone is waaaay faster and smoother with BB v0.5. The only problem i've found is the market seems more limited now. Can't find astro file manager and some other apps I had. I realize i can google and find them probably, but that's not as convenient as having them in the market. Have you seen this msmith?
Anyway...if that's the only problem I have then it was still well worth the trade-off. Thanks again for the info
I must have messed up the install...who knows. Anyway, this fixed my problem with the market

Can you return to stock with the CS Milestone? Also, I saw msmith198025 mention something about "soft rooting" -- I take it this means running the stock install, but with root permissions. Is this possible? I haven't tried BuglessBeast, but I have to admit stock on this phone runs miles better than DangerROM did on the Hero. I don't really have any reason to run a different ROM (yet), but I do miss my wifi tether, and I can't imagine how fast this thing would run with an overclocked CPU.
Yes it is quite easy to return to stock. After you root, simply download rom manager and backup the current rom. That way if you want to go back to the stock rom, you just reflash it.
If you mean is it possible to unroot, then the answer there is also yes. Depending on the method you used to obtain root, it is simply clicking unroot and you are unrooted.
The stock rom is fine, but I would highly recommend running a custom one. I have tried several and am still sold on Bugless Beast v0,5
It is based on the latest build of Froyo.
But yes you can run stock and simply root if you want to.
I never noticed apps being missing from the market as I backed them all up to my sd card with mybackup pro before I wiped and reflashed. Then I simply got them back from there.
Glad you got it fixed and glad you are enjoying it.
I agree with you on V0.5 its a big improvement over 0.4 and that one was good already.
msmith198025,
Thanks for the reply. I found this thread - http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/74028-root-droid-1-regardless-os-version.html - and it really gives a FANTASTIC explanation of the entire process. I've got a decent Linux background, but the whole world of Android ROMs/bootloaders/SBFs/etc. is really weird to me. From what I understand, this just replaces the bootloader, disables FRS, and installs the apps you need to run root. This is EXACTLY what I was looking for.
The Milestone is shaping up to be the uberphone I was always looking for. This makes me happy.
Thanks again :)

I'm running stock with super user permissions and love it, haven't tried a custom rom yet, I usually clock to 1ghz only during heavy use but can go to 1.2.

You should try some customs. If you like it as is, you will love it with a custom. Try several. Just be sure to backup your current.
Edit: not all customs are created equal obviously. Most are better than stock though.
Oh I'm sure I'll try BuglessBeast at some point -- I'm always having to tinker with my gadgets :) Gonna root it tonight and put a backup of the ROM in seventeen different places probably.
i have a review sort of of a couple of roms, and instructions, ill be writing a proper review of several roms, kernels and themes over the course of the next few months. t tell me what yall think the site is.

Nice, think I will try this today
A question on rolling out different ROMs on the Milestone: I'm still running a rooted stock 2.1 for the moment, but I think I'm gonna try some ROMs out this weekend. I remember on my Hero I had to be very careful about making sure the radio was right, and dialing the *228 number to update the tower information. Scanning the BuglessBeast page, I don't see anything mentioning CellSouth users. When I'm using the Verizon ROMs, is there any special instructions for CellSouth users?
I installed Bugless Beast v.05 last night, it does boot up like a droid and has many features from VZW, this was my first time doing this and that was a little scary lol but the radio did not change and *228 activated on CS no problem. I did have to go back and download a market fix because the market hardly work, but other than that I didn't have to do anything special besides wipe cache and data, and had to remember to not sign in before the device rebooted. I was planning on trying sapphire but rom manager would not locate it.
So far this is a very nice rom
I've never had to *228, and it's always had no problem. Sorry about sapphire, I don't know why it's not showing in rom manager at the moment. You can always go to there site and download it and put it on your sd card for install. Or you can try Liquid frozen yogurt with p3droid's kernels (for certain wifi's to work). In fact, most roms you can flash (as long as same version (usually within the 2.2.* series)) right over the next rom, but the first flash you do coming from cell souths rom needs a wipe cache and data for sure.
By the way, could you tell me your baseband version?
I think I did 228 as a habit lol, baseband is C_02.05.00R, really enjoying this rom and all of the features
Oh, ok, that's great, I tried it to see if maybe I could get a newer baseband that way. However, we are both up to date as of the baseband issue. (I don't thing CS has released a baseband update for this phone since release). Glad you are enjoying the rom, I'm in the habit of trying everything new (after a nandroid backup of course). Lately, since Sapphire hasn't updated to Android 2.2.1 yet (and btw, BB v.05 is at 2.2.0), I've been trying 2.2.1 based roms and found if you don't care for themes, SnkBitten is great. Otherwise, this revision of liquid frozen yogurt is as smooth as it's title (very great release in my opinion). Works great with p3droid kernels and love the gala s theme (though I'm running a modded gala s theme). Simply Stunning from chevyno1 at it's latest release is 4.9 but you'll have to do some manual downloading there. I always find his roms fascinating. So far, my favorite themes are NexTang, Nex, Smoked, Smoked Glass, and Gala S. Barely will I consider installing a rom if I can't have one of those themes with it. I just can't live without those 2 themes.
Look around, I'm sure bugless beast has themes as well that you can try. While I do know it's a rock solid rom, when done correctly, I missed a couple of features from Simply Stunning and it didn't want to do something right (can't remember what) so instead of troubleshooting and fixing, I just reverted to Simply Stunning (now on referred to as SS). Then I ended up seeing the new Liquid Frozen Yogurt (LFY from this point on), and decided to try it as well, and it has done nothing but run gracefully and look wonderful for me.
