cellular south hero 2.1 - does ev = 3g?

Does the ev network connection equal 3g connections? My phone only ever displays ev and the CS reps insist that this equals 3g. Any suggestions?
It does equal 3g, it did on my Blackberry Tour I had, my Milestone and Desire both say 3g now
Thank you. I'll assume that this is a custom setting for CS, since I've seen a sprint hero with "3g" up top.
